Be Prepared for the Collision Repair Jargon

The process of getting your car fixed after an accident can be confusing on its own, but the terminology that can accompany it can make it even more puzzling, especially if you’ve never been through it before. Here are some common words/phrases you may hear before, during, and after the repair of your vehicle.

Appraisal

The written valuation of your vehicle’s worth from your insurance company is called an appraisal. Your repair shop may provide you with a damage appraisal, which is the written estimate of the cost of the damage your vehicle suffered. You may have one appraisal from your insurance company and another from your body shop.

Estimate

As stated, your repair shop may give you a written estimate. This document will include the damages your vehicle has and the cost of the parts, repairs, and labor it will require to fix it after the accident.

Repair Authorization

Before your chosen body shop can get to work on your vehicle, they need your written consent to do so. Depending on the situation and your specific insurance policy, the shop may also need your insurance company’s approval.

Repair Order or Work Order

In order to keep everything organized for you and the insurance company, the shop will track everything they do to your vehicle, including the parts they used and the necessary hours of labor.

Exclusion

Unfortunately, sometimes everything isn’t covered by your auto insurance. Any repair labeled or referred to as an exclusion is not covered. Therefore, it’s important to review your coverage before an accident occurs!
